Federal Agents Arrest Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez for Immigration Violations

A 52-year-old Waukegan man, Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, who was previously accused of hiding a woman’s body in a trash can filled with bleach, was arrested by federal immigration agents in Chicago over the weekend. Mendoza-Gonzalez, a Mexican national living in the United States illegally, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for immigration violations.

The arrest comes after Mendoza-Gonzalez was involved in a disturbing case where he allegedly concealed the body of 37-year-old Megan Bos of Antioch. Bos went missing in February, and after an extensive investigation, her decomposing body was found in a bleach-filled trash can behind Mendoza-Gonzalez’s home. He confessed to authorities that Bos had overdosed at his residence, and instead of seeking help, he kept her body in the basement for days before ultimately moving it outside.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations against him, Mendoza-Gonzalez was released from custody shortly after his initial arrest due to the limitations imposed by Illinois’ SAFE-T Act. The charges against him, which included abuse of a corpse, concealing a death, and obstruction, did not qualify for pretrial detention under the state law.

The release of Mendoza-Gonzalez sparked outrage among Bos’ family and local officials, who criticized the lack of accountability in the justice system. Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner expressed his concerns about the potential consequences of the SAFE-T Act and called for reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.

While some national media outlets have reported that Bos was found decapitated, the Lake County Coroner’s Office clarified that this information was false.

As Mendoza-Gonzalez remains in federal custody for immigration violations, the case highlights the challenges posed by conflicting laws and regulations in addressing serious crimes and ensuring justice for victims.
