Jim Clyburn / CNN State of the Union

Representative Jim Clyburn recently asserted that President Joe Biden could have feasibly completed another four-year term in office.

During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Clyburn expressed his conviction that the 82-year-old Biden was capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of a presidency that would extend until January 2029.

Here’s a glimpse of their dialogue:

TAPPER: Given what we’ve observed from President Biden, particularly in audio clips and throughout 2023 and 2024, especially on the debate stage, do you genuinely believe Joe Biden could have sustained his presidential duties through January 2029, when he would be 86 years old?

CLYBURN: Absolutely. I felt that way then, and I still do. But let me clarify, I can’t predict the future. When people inquire if I was aware of certain things, the answer is no. You’re making my point—age isn’t everything. I’ve encountered individuals in their 30s and 40s who developed Alzheimer’s. It’s not merely about age; it’s about competency. I never perceived anything that suggested Joe Biden was unfit for the role. It’s as straightforward as that.

TAPPER: Do you think your party’s dismal polling numbers among the American populace are linked to the perception that many within your party, especially in the White House, have concealed the president’s actual limitations?

CLYBURN: That is certainly a possibility.

Shortly after this interview aired, Biden’s office disclosed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was evaluated for a newly discovered prostate nodule following an increase in urinary symptoms. On Friday, he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement read.

“While this indicates a more severe variant of the disease, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.”

The statement further indicated that Biden and his family are actively “reviewing treatment options with his medical team.”
