Report: Climate is central to truth and reconciliation for the Sámi
SHARE

The Finnish government recently released a Truth and Reconciliation report shedding light on the historical injustices faced by the country’s Indigenous Sámi people. Unlike neighboring Norway and Sweden, Finland never enforced the integration of the Sámi into law, but the imposition of Finnish language and culture became the norm. Residential boarding schools further alienated the Sámi from their culture, and post-World War II redevelopment led to a loss of Indigenous territory.

With a population of roughly 10,000 in Finland, the Sámi face threats to their traditional way of life due to climate change. Warming winters, erratic weather patterns, and encroaching mining and energy development are making reindeer herding and fishing increasingly challenging. The report emphasizes the urgent need for the Finnish government to collaborate with the Sámi to address these threats effectively.

The recommendations in the report focus on giving the Sámi more control over land use and regulations. It calls for the protection of old-growth forests in Sámi territory, reparations for damage caused by the forestry industry, and the establishment of a Sámi Business and Climate Fund to support climate action and protect Sámi livelihoods. Furthermore, the report highlights the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific research for ecosystem restoration.

Aslak Holmberg, a member of the Saami Council, stresses the significance of granting the Sámi more authority over their territory to mitigate the negative impacts of activities like military training exercises. While the Finnish prime minister has expressed a willingness to apologize to the Sámi people, there are concerns that words alone may not be enough without concrete commitments to effect change.

Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Hannele Pokka, acknowledges that the report is just the first step in a longer process of repair. She remains hopeful that the Finnish people will take action on the report’s recommendations to promote healing and reconciliation with the Sámi community. The road to justice and restoration may be long, but it is essential for acknowledging past wrongs and building a more equitable future for the Sámi people. In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to overlook the importance of self-care. With busy schedules and constant demands on our time and energy, taking care of ourselves often falls to the bottom of our priority list. However, self-care is essential for maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Self-care is not just about pampering ourselves with bubble baths and massages (although those can certainly be part of it!). It encompasses a wide range of activities and practices that help us nurture and nourish ourselves on a deeper level. This can include things like getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, and managing stress effectively.

One of the key components of self-care is setting boundaries. This means learning to say no to things that drain our energy or do not serve us, and prioritizing our own needs and well-being. It also means recognizing when we need a break and giving ourselves permission to take one.

Another important aspect of self-care is self-compassion. This involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a friend in need. It means being gentle with ourselves when we make mistakes, and recognizing that we are only human.

Practicing self-care can have a profound impact on our overall health and happiness. When we take the time to care for ourselves, we are better able to show up fully in our relationships, work, and other areas of our lives. We are more resilient in the face of challenges, and better able to cope with stress and adversity.

In order to make self-care a priority in our lives, we must first recognize its importance and value. We must be willing to prioritize our own well-being, and make time for the activities and practices that nourish us. This may require setting boundaries with others, and learning to let go of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations.

Self-care is not selfish. In fact, it is essential for our overall health and well-being. By taking care of ourselves, we are better able to care for others and show up fully in all areas of our lives. So let’s make self-care a priority, and commit to nurturing and nourishing ourselves on a daily basis. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it.
