The latest research suggests that a compound called inulin-propionate ester (IPE) may be less effective at preventing weight gain in young people, but could help them build more muscle. This compound contains propionate, a short-chain fatty acid that is produced in the body when dietary fiber is fermented by gut microbes. When taken in the form of IPE, propionate can stimulate the release of hormones in the gut that reduce feelings of hunger.

A recent study published in eClinicalMedicine conducted a randomized trial with participants aged 20 to 40 to investigate the effects of IPE on weight management. The results showed that there was no significant difference in weight gain between the group that consumed IPE and the control group that consumed inulin, a type of fiber. However, the participants who took IPE did experience a significant increase in fat-free mass, indicating a potential benefit for muscle building.

Professor Douglas Morrison of the University of Glasgow, one of the study’s authors, emphasized the importance of preventing weight gain in early life for long-term health benefits. He noted that while the results in younger participants differed from previous studies with older adults, the increase in fat-free mass is an interesting finding that warrants further investigation.

The researchers acknowledged that external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced the study results, and suggested that the dose of IPE used in the trial may not have had the same metabolic effects in younger individuals. Professor Gary Frost of Imperial College London, the lead investigator, highlighted the complexity of weight management in younger adults and the need for age-specific interventions to prevent obesity.

Overall, the study sheds new light on the potential benefits of IPE for muscle building in younger individuals, while also highlighting the need for further research to fully understand its effects on weight management. The findings contribute to ongoing efforts to develop effective strategies for maintaining a healthy weight and improving metabolic health across different age groups.
