United Health Group has announced the appointment of Dr. Patrick Conway as the new chief executive officer of Optum, a major player in the healthcare industry. Dr. Conway, who currently serves as the chief executive of Optum Rx, will take on his new role starting May 6. He will be stepping into the shoes of Heather Cianfrocco, who is transitioning to the position of UnitedHealth Groupâs executive vice president of Governance, Compliance, and Information Security.

Optum alone contributed significantly to this figure, with a 26% increase in revenues to $253 billion in the last year.
The decision to appoint Dr. Conway as Optum’s CEO comes in the wake of UnitedHealth Group’s recent setback in meeting Wall Street’s earnings expectations. The company cited rising costs in caring for seniors under its Medicare plans as the reason for lowering its earnings outlook for 2025. Prior to joining UnitedHealth and Optum, he held roles such as President and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, as well as Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality and Chief Medical Officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
