The Otago Sparks have once again proven their resilience this season, adding to their list of positive attributes.

After a disappointing performance in their first Super Smash game, the Sparks bounced back with a convincing victory against Wellington Blaze at the University Oval.

The Wellington Blaze were restricted to 120 for five off their 20 overs by the disciplined Sparks bowling attack. In response, Otago chased down the target with ease, losing only three wickets and finishing with two overs to spare.

This win marked the Sparks’ second consecutive victory over Wellington, a team that had previously dominated the rivalry between the two sides.

The balanced bowling attack of the Sparks was evident in the match, with five different bowlers picking up a wicket each and four of them conceding fewer than seven runs an over.

Wellington’s batters struggled to accelerate the scoring rate against the efficient home attack, managing only 25 runs in the powerplay overs. Despite getting good starts, they fell short of a competitive total.

Otago’s openers, Suzie Bates and Bella James, set the tone for the chase with a solid partnership of 77 runs in just nine overs. Both batters played with intent and innovation, hitting five boundaries each before departing for scores of 36 and 40 respectively.

Caitlin Blakely and Polly Inglis then calmly guided the Sparks to victory after the openers’ dismissals, securing a comfortable seven-wicket win for the home side.

With an impressive 10-point lead at the top of the women’s Super Smash table, Otago looks set to continue their winning streak in upcoming matches against Auckland and Northern.

Overall, the Sparks’ performance showcased their strength as a team and their ability to bounce back from setbacks, making them a formidable force in the competition.

Result: Otago Sparks won by seven wickets.
