Tom Weitzel, a retired Chief of Police in suburban Riverside, has dedicated the past 15 years of his life advocating for a significant change in the way crimes against police officers are handled. His personal experience of being shot in the line of duty nearly four decades ago has fueled his passion for this cause. Weitzel firmly believes that the on-duty murder of a police officer should be classified as a federal crime, investigated and prosecuted by federal authorities, and eligible for the death penalty.

Weitzel’s proposal is clear and concise. He suggests the establishment of a federal “go team,” similar to the response teams deployed in the aftermath of plane crashes, to take over investigations immediately when a police officer is shot on duty. Federal agencies such as the FBI, ATF, and the U.S. Department of Justice would be tasked with leading these investigations, bringing in their resources, expertise, and evidence-gathering capabilities.

In Congress, a similar initiative known as the “Thin Blue Line Act” has been introduced, although it has yet to progress beyond the committee stage. This bill aims to make the murder of police officers, firefighters, and other first responders a capital federal crime.

Despite ongoing violence against law enforcement officers, with a reported 285 officers shot nationwide this year through October, Weitzel remains steadfast in his advocacy. He emphasizes the need for consistency and a strong message that attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated.

Reflecting on the night in 1987 when he was shot while on duty, Weitzel recalls the harrowing experience and the subsequent investigation that failed to bring the perpetrators to justice due to the statute of limitations. This personal ordeal motivated him to push for changes in the law, ultimately leading to the removal of the statute of limitations for attempted murder of a police officer in Illinois.

Weitzel’s efforts to garner support for his proposal have faced challenges, with limited responses from political leaders. Despite this, he remains resolute in his belief that police officers deserve nationwide, uniform protection, and that the death of an officer should trigger a comprehensive and robust response.

Advocating for the death penalty for those convicted of killing police officers, Weitzel emphasizes the importance of this deterrent in protecting law enforcement personnel. He stresses the urgency of implementing these changes, especially in light of recent incidents where multiple officers have been shot in a short span of time.
