David Boreanaz has been announced as the lead in NBC’s upcoming reboot pilot of “The Rockford Files,” where he will be stepping into the iconic role of Jim Rockford. The drama pilot, originally greenlit by the network in January, follows Rockford as a witty, world-weary, and chronically broke private investigator with a strong moral core.
Boreanaz takes on the role previously portrayed by the late James Garner, who played Rockford on the original NBC series from 1974-1980 and in six made-for-TV movies on CBS.
The official synopsis of the pilot sets the stage for the series, stating, “Newly paroled after serving time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator in Los Angeles. With his charm and wit, he navigates solving cases while facing challenges from both the local police and organized crime.”
Best known for his roles in “Angel,” a spinoff of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and the long-running Fox procedural “Bones,” Boreanaz brings a wealth of experience to the role. He also starred in the CBS/Paramount+ military drama “SEAL Team,” in which he not only acted but also directed episodes and served as a producer.
Represented by CAA, Visionary Entertainment, and Felker Toczek Suddleson, Boreanaz joins the “Rockford Files” pilot penned by writer and executive producer Mike Daniels. Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman will executive produce the show, with Chris Leanza serving as co-executive producer. The series is being produced by Universal Television.
“The Rockford Files” has seen several attempts at a reboot in the past, including a failed 2009 NBC pilot starring Dermot Mulroney and produced by Steve Carell. Universal Pictures also toyed with the idea of a feature film adaptation starring Vince Vaughn, which ultimately did not come to fruition.
With Boreanaz at the helm and a talented team behind the scenes, the new “Rockford Files” pilot promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved character and his world of mystery and intrigue. Fans of the original series and newcomers alike can look forward to seeing this modern adaptation unfold on screen.
