Rupert Murdoch Loses Legal Bid to Change Family Trust to Protect Fox News from Liberal Children

Rupert Murdoch, the 93-year-old media titan, recently lost a legal battle to modify his family trust in order to safeguard the future of Fox News from his liberal children. His attempt to alter the trust was aimed at transferring control of his empire to his eldest son, Lachlan, to prevent his other children from potentially changing the right-wing editorial direction of the network.

According to a report by The New York Times, a judge in Nevada dismissed Murdoch’s efforts to amend the trust in a sealed court document ruling. The commissioner, Edmund J. Gorman Jr., concluded that both Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch had acted in “bad faith” in their attempt to consolidate control of the media empire and lock in Fox News’s conservative stance.

The ruling, which spanned 96 pages, criticized the Murdochs for orchestrating a “carefully crafted charade” to solidify Lachlan’s executive roles within the company, disregarding the impact it may have on the beneficiaries of the family trust. Despite their disappointment with the ruling, Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch plan to appeal the decision.

While Lachlan Murdoch shares his father’s conservative views, his siblings have been vocal about their opposing political beliefs. James Murdoch, the younger son, has been openly critical of Fox News, particularly in the aftermath of the January 6th protests related to the 2020 presidential election. He condemned the network for spreading “lies” that incited dangerous forces.

In a surprising move, James endorsed Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign in September, aligning himself with prominent business leaders in support of the Democratic candidate. Similarly, Murdoch’s daughter, Elisabeth, has also demonstrated left-wing leanings by hosting fundraisers for Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.

Rupert Murdoch, who stepped down as chairman of News Corporation, continues to serve as its chairman emeritus with an estimated net worth of $20 billion. The media empire includes prominent titles such as Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, and The Times of London.

The legal battle over the family trust highlights the complex dynamics within the Murdoch family and the ongoing struggle to maintain the editorial direction of Fox News amidst differing political ideologies.
