Former NFL player Marcus Spears has weighed in on Russell Wilson‘s football future, suggesting it’s time for him to retire. He made these remarks to TMZ Sports after Wilson’s recent benching by the Giants.
Spears expressed his opinion in a quick conversation in New York City, asserting that Wilson’s career is over now that Jaxson Dart has taken over as the starting quarterback in New York.
When asked directly if Wilson should give up the game, Spears replied simply, “Yeah, Russell gotta go!”
Wilson signed with the Giants in March after facing three challenging seasons with the Broncos and Steelers. Following a shaky start to the 2025 season with a 0-3 record, Coach Brian Daboll chose to bench him in favor of Dart.
Despite the benching, Wilson stated his desire to return to the field, declaring, “I’m not done.” However, Spears does not share this sentiment.
“For me personally, I’m not done. I have immense belief in myself and I know my potential. I can contribute positively to this football team if called upon.”

As for Dart, Spears praised the rookie’s performance after securing a win in his debut, confidently stating, “Dart’s going to be good.”
Dart aims to further validate Spears’ and the fans’ confidence in him when the Giants face the Saints this Sunday at the Superdome.
