Hulu has officially greenlit a pilot for a reboot of the beloved sci-fi series “The X-Files” from acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler. The pilot will be written, directed, and executive produced by Coogler himself under his Proximity Media banner. Joining him as executive producers are Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, and original series creator Chris Carter. The pilot is set to be produced by Onyx Collective and 20th Television.

The new series will follow two FBI agents who are assigned to a long-shuttered division dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena. Danielle Deadwyler has been cast as one of the lead roles, with the other lead role yet to be filled. Deadwyler is known for her work in films like “The Harder They Fall” and “Till,” as well as TV shows like “Atlanta” and “The Bear.”

Coogler’s take on “The X-Files” first came to light in 2023 when he expressed interest in rebooting the series with a diverse cast. Since then, little information has been released about the project, but Coogler has hinted at his involvement in various interviews.

This marks the first-ever reboot of “The X-Files,” although the original series returned for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018. The show also spawned two movies, “The X-Files” in 1998 and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” in 2008. While original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have reprised their roles in the past, they are not currently attached to Coogler’s pilot.

Coogler has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood, with his latest film “Sinners” receiving a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations. He is up for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, with the film itself nominated for Best Picture. Coogler made history by becoming the first Black person to win a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In addition to his work on “The X-Files” reboot, Coogler is known for directing the “Black Panther” films, the “Creed” franchise, and “Fruitvale Station.” He also produced the Oscar-winning film “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Coogler is represented by WME, M88, The Lede Company, and Cohen & Gardner, while Deadwyler is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency, Play Management, and Ziffren Brittenham. Carter is represented by CAA and Gang Tyre.

Fans of the original series and newcomers alike can look forward to Coogler’s fresh take on “The X-Files” as it makes its way to Hulu in the near future.
