SAG-AFTRA has announced the introduction of its new Verticals Agreement, a tailored media contract designed specifically for serialized micro and vertical dramas.

This agreement will encompass various projects with budgets not exceeding $300,000, providing essential protections and flexibility for creators, actors, and producers affiliated with SAG-AFTRA.

“We’re excited to roll out an agreement that aligns with contemporary audience consumption habits while safeguarding the interests of performers. This contract reflects the realities of these productions — including their timelines, budget constraints, and artistic goals — all while upholding the union’s fundamental standards for actor protections,” stated Chief Negotiator and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland in a press release. “Verticals are not just another format; they provide fresh avenues for storytelling, reaching new audiences each day.”

“Our members continually seek out valuable work opportunities. As technology evolves and our industry explores innovative methods to engage viewers, new formats surface,” noted Crabtree-Ireland. “SAG-AFTRA views the emergence of so-called “verticals” as a thrilling new domain. This rapidly-adapting format is gaining traction, and we are committed to supporting our performers as they navigate this evolving business landscape. By creating a contract meticulously crafted for the distinct needs of these projects, our union is responding to the current moment. As the vertical content market experiences significant growth, our partnership with producers will also expand.”

Variety reported last month that microdramas generated $819 million in revenue in 2024, with projections suggesting a rise to $3.8 billion by the end of the decade. In China, microdrama revenues are anticipated to surpass those of theatrical box offices this year.
