During a time when contraception was not readily available and only accessible to married individuals, Field found herself facing an unexpected pregnancy with little support from her family or financial resources. In a desperate attempt to terminate the pregnancy, Field, along with her family doctor and his wife, made a trip to Mexico.
Recalling the ordeal, Field described how they parked on a desolate street three blocks away from the clinic where she would undergo the procedure. The family doctor handed her an envelope of cash and instructed her to go inside and then quickly return. Field was given no anesthetic for the procedure, only a few puffs of ether that did little to numb the pain.
As if the situation couldn’t get any worse, Field shared that during the procedure, she realized that the technician was molesting her, adding to her feelings of shame and trauma. Despite the horrific experience, Field emphasized the importance of fighting for women’s rights and reproductive freedom, particularly in light of current political debates surrounding abortion laws.
Field urged her followers to support Democratic nominee Kamala Harris over Republican nominee Donald Trump, emphasizing the need to protect women’s health and autonomy. She concluded her emotional video by acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the importance of moving forward, stating, “We can’t go back.”
