Some smartphones are experiencing rapid battery drain, losing nearly a full charge overnight. Users have reported their devices being almost fully charged at bedtime, only to find the battery level plummeting to just a few percent by morning.

This excessive energy consumption is also causing devices to overheat, which not only speeds up battery degradation but could potentially pose a fire risk. The overall performance of the phones is also being compromised.

The devices affected by this issue are running Samsung’s One UI 8.5, which has been available since May. They also have the latest security update, which addresses various security vulnerabilities as detailed in the official patch notes.

What you can do

If your device hasn’t received the problematic security patch, it’s advisable to delay the update until Samsung resolves the bug. This caution is due to the uncertainty about whether other devices might also encounter battery issues.

For users whose Galaxy smartphones are already impacted, extra caution is recommended. Instead of leaving the phone on standby or charging overnight, it’s safer to turn it off completely. Avoid exposing the device to additional heat sources, like direct sunlight, and do not store it in confined spaces such as drawers or under pillows, to prevent overheating.

It’s beneficial to report the issue to Samsung Support, even if it’s a known problem, so that you can be notified when a solution is available. Samsung is expected to release a corrective patch soon.
