San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie found himself in the middle of a chaotic brawl involving his security detail and bystanders in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The incident, detailed in a police report obtained by the San Francisco Standard, began when Lurie spotted individuals sitting on the sidewalk and instructed his driver to pull over.

Upon exiting the vehicle, Lurie approached the men and requested that they move from the sidewalk. One of the individuals, identified as Tony Phillips, refused to comply and engaged in a heated exchange with Lurie and his security officer, Joel Aguayo. Despite Aguayo identifying himself as a San Francisco police officer, Phillips remained defiant and refused to move.

The situation escalated when Phillips threatened Aguayo and attempted to physically confront him. Aguayo reacted by pushing Phillips to the ground, leading to a physical altercation between the two. As the brawl unfolded, Lurie was seen observing the altercation before running to inform his driver, officer Nicolas Boccio, about the situation.

Boccio rushed to assist Aguayo, but encountered another individual, Abraham Simon, who attempted to assault him. Boccio drew his service weapon, causing Simon to cease his attack. While Aguayo and Boccio struggled to restrain Phillips, arriving officers eventually took him into custody. Phillips now faces charges including threatening an officer, inflicting bodily harm, and violating a court order.

Aguayo sustained injuries during the altercation, including cuts to the back of his head, facial bruising, and a back injury. The city’s Department of Police Accountability is investigating the incident.

In response to the incident, Lurie released an Instagram video addressing his commitment to public safety and addressing homelessness and behavioral health crises in the city. However, the mayor faced criticism for his handling of the situation, with some social media users questioning his security team’s actions.

The altercation between Lurie’s security detail and bystanders highlights the challenges faced in addressing social issues in San Francisco’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. As the investigation into the incident continues, the city remains focused on improving public safety and addressing the root causes of homelessness and mental health struggles.
