Sander Lak Showcases Debut Collection in Los Angeles Before Paris Launch
Before unveiling his debut Sanderlak collection in Paris later this week, designer Sander Lak gave a sneak peek in a gallery space within his Chrystie Street office building. Sanderlak is not just a sportswear line but also a concept brand that will evolve each year based on the designer’s chosen location. The initial inspiration for this year’s collection came from Los Angeles, where Lak spent time working on a screenplay after the closure of his previous brand, Sies Marjan.
The gallery space on Chrystie Street was adorned with portraits of various Angelenos, ranging from celebrities to street-cast individuals. Books by L.A. authors like Eve Babitz and John Fante added to the ambiance, with a particularly striking green paperback edition of Rosecrans Baldwin’s Everything Now: Lessons From the City-State of Los Angeles. Color plays a significant role in the Sanderlak aesthetic, as seen in the vibrant hues of the collection.
The racks showcased a mix of bold colors and textures, including lemon sorbet sweat sets, bordeaux red ensembles, sky blue jackets and cargos, deep pink denim separates, and a variety of other eye-catching pieces. The attention to detail in fabric selection was evident in the slubby cotton tees, cotton rib tops, and fuzzy marl knit sweaters. Each piece exuded a sense of thoughtfulness and refinement.
While Sanderlak is not quite normcore, it stands out for its refusal to conform to traditional fashion norms. In a time when luxury designers are moving away from excess, Sander Lak’s minimalist approach resonates with a new wave of simplicity. As Miuccia Prada recently criticized overcomplicated designs, Lak’s ability to do more with less is a refreshing take on modern fashion.
