The release of the camera test for Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series, American Love Story, featuring Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidegon as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, caused quite a stir on social media. While some scrutinized the costuming, others, including Bessette-Kennedy’s colorist Brad Johns, expressed concerns about Pidgeon’s blonde hair looking too modern.
In response to the backlash, Murphy revealed that a style advisory board had been established to ensure accuracy in the show’s portrayal. It was clarified that Pidgeon’s blonde hair in the test shots was actually a wig. However, at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Pidgeon surprised everyone with a new dye job, which was confirmed by her colorist Kari Hill to be her real hair.
Hill explained that the transformation from dark brown to blonde took approximately 18 hours over two days to maintain the health of Pidgeon’s hair. She used Schwarzkopf Professional products to achieve a soft, natural root that transitions into multi-tonal blondes with buttery, golden highlights and subtle lowlights. This new color perfectly captures the essence of Bessette-Kennedy’s signature style, which often featured buttery tones.
The internet’s mixed reactions to the initial camera test have now been replaced with admiration for Pidgeon’s stunning new look. With the show’s attention to detail and dedication to authenticity, fans can expect an immersive and visually captivating portrayal of the iconic couple in American Love Story.
