Railed off
The Minister of Railways, Hon J.G. Coates, has denied the reinstatement of stations in the suburban railway fares area for Waitati, Evansdale, and Purakanui. He stated that the traffic from these areas to Dunedin did not justify the reduction in fares offered for suburban travel. The decision was made based on the lack of sufficient passenger traffic between these stations and Dunedin.
Pitt of dispair
During the initial irregular time-table of City Corporation buses to Maori Hill, a student humorously wrote on a bank wall: “Time Table: Motor Buses. Start Anytime. Arrive Sometime.”
Boy raises alarm
A small boy playing near Langley and Son’s china warehouse in Maclaggan street noticed smoke and alerted the City Fire Brigade. The fire, which had started in the packing room, was quickly controlled by the brigade. The prompt action of the boy prevented a potentially larger fire and saved a significant portion of stock.
