The Savannah College of Art & Design, known for its unique honeybee mascot, is a university that defies expectations. Despite being located in the picturesque town of Savannah, Georgia, rather than a bustling metropolis like its competitors, SCAD has proven itself to be a powerhouse in the world of art and design.

This was evident at the recent School of Fashion runway show, held at SCAD’s Atlanta campus. The event kicked off with a musical performance by two talented alumni, showcasing the diverse talents that SCAD nurtures. The runway itself, designed by alumna Trish Andersen, was a colorful and vibrant backdrop for the student collections.

In the past, SCAD’s fashion students may have operated independently of industry trends, but this year’s show demonstrated a new level of awareness and sophistication. Themes like boho chic and Western aesthetics were prevalent, with many collections drawing inspiration from military garb. The use of upcycled materials and intricate craftsmanship highlighted the students’ creativity and skill.

What set this year’s collections apart was their wearability and attention to detail. From Julianna Almandoz’s button embellishments to Hollis Maxon’s leatherwork, each piece showcased a high level of craftsmanship and artistry. The use of unique materials like wool, Swarovski crystals, and ceramics added a touch of luxury to the designs.

Overall, the SCAD School of Fashion runway show was a testament to the talent and creativity of the university’s students. Despite being located in a small town, SCAD continues to produce innovative and forward-thinking designers who are making their mark on the industry. As the honeybee mascot symbolizes, SCAD may be small, but it is mighty in the world of art and design.
