Saya Woolfalk’s groundbreaking exhibition Empathic Universe, currently on view at the Museum of Arts and Design, is a vibrant and immersive exploration of the artist’s hybridized world. Woolfalk’s art blurs the lines between the real and the imaginary, inviting viewers to question the future and the boundaries of identity.

The exhibition showcases Woolfalk’s decades-long practice of worldmaking, a term that has gained traction in the art world in recent years. Influenced by her time studying in Florence, where she was inspired by the Renaissance’s interdisciplinary approach to art and design, Woolfalk’s work is a celebration of craft and creativity. She creates colorful and tactile installations that blend elements of mecha, mascot culture, and theater, inviting viewers into a whimsical and transformative space.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is the “Chimera” installation from her The Empathics series. This piece combines video, sculpture, and historical references to create a scene that is both enchanting and thought-provoking. Woolfalk’s use of color and form evokes a sense of ceremony and belonging, inviting viewers to explore the hidden depths of her imaginative universe.

Throughout the exhibition, Woolfalk delves into themes of European colonization, nature, and landscape, challenging viewers to reconsider the ways in which we perceive the world around us. By reimagining traditional painting styles and incorporating elements of pop culture and historical allusions, Woolfalk pushes the boundaries of art and identity.

At the heart of Woolfalk’s practice is a desire to create spaces for transformative experiences. Her installations act as liminal spaces where viewers can engage with her work on a deeper level, questioning the constructs of reality and the future. By incorporating theoretical frameworks and pseudo-institutions into her art, Woolfalk challenges traditional notions of purity and identity, offering a vision of a more inclusive and wondrous future.

In Empathic Universe, Woolfalk invites viewers to join her in play, to unlearn the world as we know it, and to reimagine a future that is more colorful, vibrant, and inclusive. Through her art, Woolfalk sparks a sense of wonder and curiosity, encouraging us to explore new possibilities and embrace the complexities of our existence.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Empathic Universe at the Museum of Arts and Design, on view until September 7. Curated by Alexandra Schwartz, this retrospective offers a glimpse into Woolfalk’s visionary world and promises to inspire and delight all who visit.
