Senator Chuck Schumer from New York made a peculiar suggestion on Sunday, implying that budget cuts to the US Coast Guard may have played a role in a Mexican tall ship colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge.
According to Schumer, “There are indications that this service [Vehicle Traffic System] may not be fully or adequately functional in light of a hiring freeze,” as reported in a press release.
The Coast Guard immediately responded to the scene of the collision, indicating that the accident was due to a mechanical failure that caused the ship to lose control.
President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, made budget cuts across various agencies, including the Coast Guard, which saved the agency millions of dollars.
Despite the budget cuts, the Coast Guard has not reported any hindrance in its operations as a result of the elimination of certain systems.
Schumer has faced criticism for his recent decisions and actions, including his support for a budget bill backed by President Trump and his response to questions about former President Joe Biden’s mental state.
