Adages endure for a reason; they encapsulate universal truths. Phrases like âActions speak louder than words,â âA penny saved is a penny earned,â and âDonât judge a book by its coverâ populate our daily discourse in 2025, even if many can’t trace their origins.
There’s another adage that bears repeating: âIf you live by the sword, youâll die by the sword.â This was notably echoed by CNNâs conservative commentator Scott Jennings, reflecting on the recent legal tribulations of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who faces indictment on fraud charges.
James rose to fame through her pointed legal pursuits against former President Donald Trump in a high-profile civil fraud lawsuit, involving Trump’s family and business. However, the narrative seems to have shifted, with her now facing similar scrutiny.
During an appearance on CNN Newsnight, Jennings expressed little sympathy for James, deploying her own rhetoric in a pointed critique.
Let me quote Letitia James directly:
âWhen powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hard-working people.â
While Democrats remained silent about her aggressive legal maneuvers targeting Trump, suddenly itâs a crisis now that sheâs in the spotlight herself. pic.twitter.com/uEzi48wCyiâ Scott Jennings (@ScottJenningsKY) October 10, 2025
Jennings declared James to be the least suitable advocate for arguing against selective prosecution, given that her political career has been largely devoted to targeting Trump. âThe merits of her case aside,â he stated, âcampaigning on prosecuting one individual and then complaining about selective prosecution just doesnât resonate.â
He continued, âI doubt the American public will share any sympathy for her.â In a twist of irony, Jennings further remarked, âThank God she failed in her ultimate goal of prosecuting Trump. Otherwise, we wouldnât be able to bring home these hostages this coming Monday.â
In his X post, Jennings again wielded Jamesâ own statements against her. He wrote, âAllow me to quote Letitia James directly: âWhen powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hard-working people.ââ He accused Democrats of hypocrisy, stating that their silence over her prosecution of Trump has turned into outrage when the tables have turned.
In a February 2024 X post, James decried:
When powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hardworking people.
Everyday Americans cannot lie to a bank to get a mortgage; if they did, our government would take strict action.
There must not be different rules for different types of people.â NY AG James (@NewYorkStateAG) February 16, 2024
In quoting her, Jennings appears to agree fundamentally with her premise: that powerful individuals shouldnât escape scrutiny or accountability. The question now becomes whether James will navigate this new chapter without being a victim of her own metaphorical sword.
