Second Man Charged in West Loop Shootout Involving Correctional Officer

A second individual has been arrested and charged in connection with an attempted robbery that escalated into a shootout involving an off-duty correctional worker in the West Loop. Romeo Holloway, 26, was identified as one of the suspects involved in the incident that took place on October 13. Holloway, along with Desmond White, 32, allegedly confronted a 23-year-old off-duty Cook County correctional officer in the 200 block of North Morgan, demanding his valuables at gunpoint.

According to prosecutors, the victim revealed his identity as a peace officer before Holloway and White fired shots in his direction. In response, the correctional officer drew his own weapon and fired back as the suspects attempted to flee the scene. White later arrived at Rush Hospital in an Uber with gunshot wounds and was charged last month.

During a recent hearing, Judge Susana Ortiz ordered the detention of Holloway, citing his role as the getaway driver who fired at the officer while escaping on foot and from their vehicle. Holloway confessed to being present and discharging a firearm, leading to charges of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted armed robbery, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Notably, Holloway had been released from prison on parole in May after serving half of a two-year sentence for possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. Similarly, White had been on parole since December following convictions for weapons possession and forgery.

In a separate incident in 2022, White was among a group of individuals accused of using forged work documentation to bypass electronic monitoring while facing pending felony charges. The operation was orchestrated by former City Colleges of Chicago basketball coach Edmond Pryor.
