Secuoya Studios, a prominent production company in Spain, is embarking on a new international strategy that involves focusing on producing more English-language projects. During the 4th Iberseries & Platino Industria confab, Secuoya Studios CEO Brendan Fitzgerald unveiled the company’s plan to expand globally, introducing three new executive producers – MĂłnica Aguirre, Sergio Cánovas, and Juan Carballo – who will lead this international expansion.
Fitzgerald explained that Secuoya Studios has adopted a pod system for its operations, where each executive producer leads a team consisting of an executive producer, a head of development, and a fiction coordinator. This structure allows the company to work on multiple production fronts simultaneously, ensuring efficient timelines without compromising on quality.
Sergio Cánovas, an experienced showrunner and director at Stellar Media, brings an international perspective to the team with his background in the U.S. He shared his excitement about developing a psychological thriller series set in London and Spain, featuring a diverse international cast. Cánovas also highlighted the benefits of filming in Spain, including tax advantages and access to top-tier talent.
“We can probably announce more details in six months, once we firm up the cast,” Fitzgerald revealed to Variety. He emphasized the company’s goal of becoming language-agnostic, starting with English projects, and mentioned plans to expand operations in the U.K. and other European countries while focusing on Spain, Latin America, and the U.K. as the primary markets.
Juan Carballo, a newly appointed writer and producer at Secuoya Studios, emphasized the studio’s robust infrastructure, which supports the development of complex projects. He praised the studio’s commitment to providing resources and time necessary for creating innovative and challenging narratives.
MĂłnica Aguirre, founder of Black Sheep Productions, is dedicated to expanding the studio’s presence in Latin America by identifying local projects with global appeal. She commended Secuoya Studios for its willingness to take risks and combine established IPs with fresh storytelling approaches. Aguirre expressed enthusiasm for ongoing projects and the creative freedom afforded by the studio.
In closing, Fitzgerald shared his vision for Secuoya Studios to be recognized as the most talent-friendly studio in Spain within a year. The company’s focus on producing compelling content, fostering creative freedom, and expanding into international markets positions it as a major player in the global entertainment industry.
