Historical Events on this Day:

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the deadliest terror attack in history as 19 al-Qaida hijackers took control of four jetliners, crashing two into New York’s World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth into a field in western Pennsylvania.

In 1789, Alexander Hamilton became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

In 1814, the American fleet achieved a significant victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812.

In 1936, Boulder Dam, later known as the Hoover Dam, began operations with President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiating the dam’s first hydroelectric generator.

In 1941, groundbreaking commenced for the Pentagon.

In 1954, the Miss America pageant made its debut on network TV on ABC.

In 1973, Chilean President Salvador Allende died during a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet.

In 1985, Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s MLB career hits record with his 4,192nd hit.

In 2008, presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama visited ground zero together to honor the victims of 9/11.

In 2012, a deadly attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya, resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

In 2023, a devastating flood in Derna, Libya, caused by the collapse of two dams due to heavy rain from Storm Daniel, led to over 4,000 deaths and numerous missing individuals.
