Donald Trump’s frequent and outspoken criticism of the election process has given those defending democracy a clearer understanding of his potential actions during the midterm elections.
It is unfortunate that the United States, a symbol of democracy and freedom, is contending with a threat to its democratic values from within the Oval Office. This is the situation the nation faces in 2026.

Democrats are aware of Trump’s intentions to undermine and delegitimize the midterm elections. They also anticipate that the president might attempt to sway the outcomes of crucial Senate races through voter intimidation. In response, Senate Minority Leader Schumer and Sen. Padilla conducted a briefing with journalists, including PoliticusUSA, to unveil a new initiative. This program involves deploying Senate election observers to polling stations during the midterms.
Schumer stated:
This initiative, a first in the US Senate, will position trained official observers as the Senate’s eyes and ears in the races. Their role is clear, official, and non-intrusive. They will observe, document, and report facts.
The observers will not manage elections, count votes, or support candidates. The primary aim is to document threats, uphold voter confidence, and ensure elections are determined by voters, not through bipartisan interference. We’re launching this now because the threats to the 2026 elections are real, not hypothetical.
Schumer emphasized that Democrats will not wait passively for potential chaos instigated by Trump.
