On September 14, 1901, President William McKinley passed away in Buffalo, New York, from gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin eight days earlier. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt then became the youngest U.S. president at age 42.

In 1847, U.S. forces under Gen. Winfield Scott gained control of Mexico City during the Mexican-American War.

On this date in 1861, the USS Colorado engaged in the first naval battle of the Civil War, sinking the Confederate private schooner Judah off the coast of Pensacola, Florida.

Modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan tragically died in Nice, France, in 1927 when her scarf got caught in a sports car’s wheel.
