Fishing Enthusiast Setchu’s Satoshi Kuwata Takes Fashion World by Storm

One might say that fishing is not just a hobby for Setchu’s Satoshi Kuwata, but a full-blown obsession. His love for the sport is evident in the way he proudly displays photos from his fishing trips around the world, with a recent one in Zimbabwe standing out. Kuwata, with a beaming smile, holds up a massive tiger fish he caught near the Victoria Falls, where the Batoka tribe resides.

During his trip, Kuwata discovered the incredible talent of the Batoka women, who are master weavers. Using palm fronds soaked in water to soften them, they create sculptural baskets with intricate designs. Kuwata was immediately drawn to their work and decided to collaborate with LVMH Métiers d’Art to support both the local artisans and the Batoka tribe through the Jafuta Foundation. Together, they created a series of objects using a freeform wave-like construction, similar to a Japanese random-weaving technique. These beautifully irregular pieces were integrated into the collection as decorative skirts, tops, and oversized trousers, all part of Kuwata’s new “no-size garments” concept that can fit any body shape.

While the woven pieces may not be practical for everyday wear, they showcase Kuwata’s dedication to cultural exchange and appreciation for craftsmanship. Setchu, meaning “fusion of cultures” in Japanese, is at the core of Kuwata’s design philosophy, reflecting his belief in creating beauty through collaboration and shared experiences.

As a classically-trained tailor, Kuwata continues to explore new shapes and structures, emphasizing what he calls “playful functionality.” His signature blend of British tailoring and Japanese whimsy is evident in his origami-cut tailoring, which combines Savile Row precision with travel-friendly designs. In his latest collection, Kuwata introduces “piccolo origami,” featuring fitted, genderless blazers paired with oversized trousers held up by skewed straps—a perfect example of his innovative approach to design.

In a world where travel is often aimless, Kuwata stands out for his purposeful exploration and meaningful collaborations. His romantic spirit and adventurous nature shine through in his creations, reminding us of the beauty that can emerge when different cultures come together. As Kuwata continues to delve deeper into his craft, his unique vision and commitment to cultural exchange are sure to leave a lasting impact on the fashion world.
