Seth MacFarlane Reveals No Plans for Third Season of “Ted” Prequel Series Due to High Production Costs
In a recent interview with TheWrap, Seth MacFarlane disclosed that there are currently no plans for a third season of the “Ted” prequel series. The main reason cited for this decision is the exorbitant production costs associated with the show.
MacFarlane elaborated on the situation, stating, “What I kept hearing [from Peacock and Universal] was, ‘Listen, the show is really expensive to produce and there’s no way to do it at a lower cost.’ So I said, ‘All right, I hear you loud and clear.’” He further explained that the last scene of the series was written with Max Burkholder’s character walking into a gym, presumably setting the stage for Mark Wahlberg’s appearance in the original “Ted” film.
While MacFarlane acknowledged that there is always a possibility to continue the series with some creative narrative adjustments, there is currently no concrete plan in place for a third season. Peacock has not made a final decision regarding the future of “Ted,” and Universal has yet to respond to inquiries from Variety.
The “Ted” TV series is based on the popular 2012 comedy film and follows a teenage version of Mark Wahlberg’s character, John, as he navigates adolescence with the help of his foul-mouthed teddy bear, voiced by MacFarlane. The show features a talented cast including Giorgia Whigham, Alanna Ubach, Scott Grimes, and Ara Hollyday.
Although the live-action “Ted” series may be concluding, Peacock introduced an animated spin-off in May 2025, with Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth reprising their roles from the original film.
MacFarlane expressed his appreciation for the production team and crew who worked tirelessly on the first two seasons of “Ted.” He commended their efforts in handling the extensive CGI requirements, likening the workload to “doing an ‘Avengers’ movie every 22 minutes.”
“It’s very good that we had two ‘Ted’ films under our belt because the workload is something that, on a weekly basis, is just insurmountable,” MacFarlane remarked. He credited the team in Melbourne, Australia, at Framestore for their exceptional work in bringing the show to life with intricate visual effects.
While fans may be disappointed by the news of no immediate plans for a third season, MacFarlane’s acknowledgment of the challenges and achievements of the series serves as a testament to the dedication and talent of the production team behind “Ted.”
