Shannon Sharpe Temporarily Steps Away from ESPN’s “First Take”

Shannon Sharpe has made the decision to step away from his duties at ESPN’s “First Take” following accusations and a $50 million lawsuit from a Nevada woman. The woman alleges that Sharpe, a former NFL player, raped and threatened her during a two-year relationship. In a statement posted on X, Sharpe announced that he will be taking a temporary leave from his role at ESPN, with plans to return at the start of the NFL preseason.

ESPN has issued a statement supporting Sharpe’s decision to step aside, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation. Sharpe’s absence will give the network and its parent company the necessary time to investigate the allegations and determine his future with the organization. Sharpe maintains that the relationship in question was consensual and plans to focus on his family while addressing the false accusations against him.

As a prominent figure on “First Take,” Sharpe’s absence will leave a void on the show where he typically appears on Mondays and Tuesdays. He also hosts a podcast called “Club Shay Shay.” Known for his successful NFL career as a tight end with the Denver Broncos, Sharpe transitioned into sports broadcasting with roles on Fox Sports’ “Undisputed” before joining ESPN as a contributor in 2023. In 2024, ESPN announced a new agreement with Sharpe to further expand his presence on the popular program.

Sharpe’s decision to step away from ESPN’s “First Take” comes amidst serious allegations that have rocked the sports community. As the network and its parent company navigate this situation, Sharpe will take time to address the accusations and focus on his personal life. His temporary absence will undoubtedly be felt by fans and colleagues, but the priority now is to ensure a thorough investigation and resolution to the allegations brought against him.
