Shonda Rhimes continues to explore how to conclude her groundbreaking series Grey’s Anatomy.
âReaching 450 episodes is incredible, and itâs truly a tribute to the fans who have remained loyal, enthusiastic, and invested in the show,â Rhimes, 55, shared during her appearance on the Today show on Monday, October 13.
She acknowledged that âpeople have been inquiringâ about her vision for the seriesâ finale.
âI remember knowing how it would end around episode 150,â she recollected. âNow that we’re at 450, I have no clue. Honestly, I wasn’t even certain we would make it past season 4 or 5, so being here in season 22 is absolutely surreal.â
On the prospect of future seasons, Rhimes expressed: âHonestly, the choice doesnât lie entirely with me anymore; itâs really up to the fans⊠I aim for a conclusion thatâs positive and satisfying for everyone.â
Initially premiering in 2005, the series explores the intricate personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their mentors. The show is narrated by Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and has featured audition performances from Sandra Oh (Christina Yang), Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), T.R. Knight (George OâMalley), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke), James Pickens (Richard Webber), and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd, often referred to as âMcDreamyâ).
In the season 22 premiere, which aired on Thursday, October 9, the cast dealt with the fallout from a devastating explosion, culminating in Dr. Monica Beltranâs (Natalie Morales) untimely demise due to her injuries. Anthony Hill, who plays Dr. Winston Ndugu, exclusively told Us Weekly that Moralesâ death on-screen is merely the beginning of the thrilling events in season 22.
âThere will be significant challenges for those who survived the explosion, stemming from a variety of reasons,â Hill, 37, mentioned to Us on Friday, October 10. âEveryone is carrying their own trauma from that incident, and the effort to rebuild the hospital and move ahead will present a complex journey both physically and emotionally.â
Hill hinted that this pivotal moment will introduce âunexpected twistsâ for the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial.
âIn various scenes, we look at each other in disbelief, almost saying, âThis is wild,â but that speaks volumes about the writing team,â Hill reflected. âTheyâve managed to craft this show in a way that resonates deeply with viewers, and thatâs why the audience keeps returning. It’s a captivating journey every week. Overall, I believe weâre on the right path, and I think fans will appreciate whatâs to unfold.â
Morales, 40, recently spoke regarding her characterâs demise, reassuring fans that sheâs very much alive. âHonestly, Iâm not sure what to say. Iâm not dead,â Morales said in a TikTok video on Friday. âIâm right here with you. Despite any rumors or comments, Iâm still here and available anytime you want to connect. Thank you for your concern!â
