Shonda Rhimes continues to explore how to conclude her groundbreaking series Grey’s Anatomy.

“Reaching 450 episodes is incredible, and it’s truly a tribute to the fans who have remained loyal, enthusiastic, and invested in the show,” Rhimes, 55, shared during her appearance on the Today show on Monday, October 13.

She acknowledged that “people have been inquiring” about her vision for the series’ finale.

“I remember knowing how it would end around episode 150,” she recollected. “Now that we’re at 450, I have no clue. Honestly, I wasn’t even certain we would make it past season 4 or 5, so being here in season 22 is absolutely surreal.”

On the prospect of future seasons, Rhimes expressed: “Honestly, the choice doesn’t lie entirely with me anymore; it’s really up to the fans
I aim for a conclusion that’s positive and satisfying for everyone.”

Initially premiering in 2005, the series explores the intricate personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their mentors. The show is narrated by Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and has featured audition performances from Sandra Oh (Christina Yang), Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), T.R. Knight (George O’Malley), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke), James Pickens (Richard Webber), and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd, often referred to as “McDreamy”).

In the season 22 premiere, which aired on Thursday, October 9, the cast dealt with the fallout from a devastating explosion, culminating in Dr. Monica Beltran’s (Natalie Morales) untimely demise due to her injuries. Anthony Hill, who plays Dr. Winston Ndugu, exclusively told Us Weekly that Morales’ death on-screen is merely the beginning of the thrilling events in season 22.

“There will be significant challenges for those who survived the explosion, stemming from a variety of reasons,” Hill, 37, mentioned to Us on Friday, October 10. “Everyone is carrying their own trauma from that incident, and the effort to rebuild the hospital and move ahead will present a complex journey both physically and emotionally.”

Hill hinted that this pivotal moment will introduce “unexpected twists” for the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial.

“In various scenes, we look at each other in disbelief, almost saying, ‘This is wild,’ but that speaks volumes about the writing team,” Hill reflected. “They’ve managed to craft this show in a way that resonates deeply with viewers, and that’s why the audience keeps returning. It’s a captivating journey every week. Overall, I believe we’re on the right path, and I think fans will appreciate what’s to unfold.”

Morales, 40, recently spoke regarding her character’s demise, reassuring fans that she’s very much alive. “Honestly, I’m not sure what to say. I’m not dead,” Morales said in a TikTok video on Friday. “I’m right here with you. Despite any rumors or comments, I’m still here and available anytime you want to connect. Thank you for your concern!”

Grey’s Anatomy is broadcast on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
