Aldi Employee Injured After Confronting Shoplifter in Edgewater
A 41-year-old Aldi employee was injured on Friday afternoon after confronting a shoplifter at the store located at 6221 North Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood.
According to Chicago police, the employee approached a male suspect who had allegedly stolen merchandise from the store around 2:09 p.m. During the confrontation, the suspect brandished a knife and stabbed the employee in the leg.
The injured employee was quickly transported to St. Francis Hospital, where he was initially listed in good condition.
Police were able to track the suspect to the Granville Red Line station, where he had fled onto the tracks. He was later apprehended, and charges are pending. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered in the parking lot of a Whole Foods store a few blocks south of the Aldi.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks that retail employees face when confronting shoplifters. It is always important to prioritize safety and contact law enforcement rather than putting oneself in harm’s way.
