In 2019, I published an article titled “Doctors Use Youtube And Google All The Time. Should You Be Worried?” Fast forward to 2025, and it’s time to address a new question: “Your doctor may be using ChatGPT. Should you be worried?”

Recently, technology entrepreneur Jonas Vollmer conducted an informal survey asking physicians if they use ChatGPT. Surprisingly, 76% of respondents answered in the affirmative. According to Vollmer, a physician friend informed him that most doctors utilize ChatGPT on a daily basis, inputting anonymized patient histories and diagnostic images for analysis.

In my own discussions with colleagues, it’s evident that younger physicians are more inclined to embrace AI tools like ChatGPT compared to their older counterparts. These language models can be incredibly beneficial for healthcare providers after conducting a thorough patient examination. By inputting detailed symptoms and medical data, the AI can offer alternative diagnoses that may not have been initially considered by the physician.

However, it’s crucial to emphasize that AI should serve as a complement to a physician’s expertise, not a replacement. The final responsibility of confirming any AI-generated hypothesis lies with the healthcare provider, who may need to conduct further tests for validation.

There have been instances where non-physician individuals have credited ChatGPT for providing accurate diagnoses that had eluded medical professionals for years. Additionally, studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of AI tools in diagnosing medical conditions based on patient case reports.

Physicians must adhere to strict medical privacy laws and obtain consent from patients before utilizing AI for analysis. Similar to seeking second opinions from colleagues, consulting AI should follow the same privacy guidelines.

In many ways, the integration of AI into medical practice mirrors the development of driverless cars. While AI can operate safely in controlled environments, human intervention is still necessary in complex situations. Similarly, we may soon see a shift where not utilizing AI for diagnostic assistance could be viewed as substandard medical practice.

In conclusion, tools like ChatGPT can significantly aid physicians in making accurate diagnoses, as long as they maintain oversight and respect patient privacy. As AI continues to advance, its role in healthcare is likely to become more prominent in the coming years.
