Simone Bodmer Turner recently made a major move from Brooklyn to Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts, taking her entire ceramics studio with her. The transition was not easy, but after a year and a half of hard work, her kilns are finally up and running in her new location. Not only that, but she has also launched an online shop featuring a brand new collection of vases called “Spade Vessels.”
These unique vases are a reflection of Bodmer Turner’s new surroundings and lifestyle. They have a wide mouth shape, reminiscent of a flower blooming or a fish’s lips, while the body takes on a classic urn silhouette. The inspiration behind these pieces comes from a sense of countryside practicality that she has embraced since moving out of the bustling city.
Living in New York City, Bodmer Turner used to buy pre-cut flowers and work with smaller stems. Now, in the countryside of Pioneer Valley, she can forage for flowers herself and create larger, more abundant arrangements. This shift in her surroundings has influenced her design process, leading to the creation of vases that can hold rugged blooms and grasses gathered from the fields and roadsides.
In a recent interview, Bodmer Turner explained, “It’s really a product of being here in the countryside for the first time in designing these vases in a place where instead of going supermarket or the bodega carefully choosing a few stems of expensive florals that have been brought into the city for the first time, I take my clippers out on walks, go out into the fields, and cut whatever I’m seeing. The fact that they can hold a much more abundant arrangement feels very suited to being here and suddenly having flowers just growing everywhere wild on the side of the road.”
The Spade Vessels collection is a testament to Bodmer Turner’s creative evolution and her ability to adapt to new environments. Each vase is a work of art that captures the essence of nature and the beauty of the countryside. With her kilns fired up and her online shop open for business, Bodmer Turner is excited to share her latest creations with the world.
