Unlocking the Convenience of Google Pay on Your Phone

As a 27-year-old, contactless payments have been the norm for my entire adult life. I think nothing of tapping my card when paying at shops, restaurants, and on public transport – it’s just so easy, especially with the UK’s generous £100 purchase limit.

However, despite having reviewed phones for six years, that hasn’t extended to paying with my phone. Almost every handset I’ve tested has supported Google Pay, but I’ve never really seen the point of it as a bank card replacement. In my experience, fumbling around to unlock my phone and open the Google Wallet app has always taken longer than simply whipping out my card.

For a while, I’ve looked enviously at the iPhone, which uses a double-tap of the power button to trigger Face ID and then immediately lets you pay. Android’s slow adoption of a secure face unlock solution meant something similar wasn’t possible for a long time.

Even with the 3D version on my Pixel 9 Pro XL, the extra step of opening the Wallet app made it feel cumbersome, not convenient. Or so I thought…

After discovering this trick, I was tapping away left, right and centre

As it turns out, Google Pay will work anytime you have your phone unlocked. Just hold it near the terminal as you usually would, and it’ll use your default card to pay. And unlike contactless in the UK, there’s no fixed limit on how much you can spend. My bank allows you to go up to £250,000 per transaction, for example – a big upgrade.

See also  Eliminating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in Medicaid My Administration has been relentlessly committed to rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in Government programs to preserve and protect them for those who rely most on them. The Medicaid program was designed to be a program to compassionately provide taxpayer dollars to healthcare providers who offer care to the most vulnerable Americans. To keep payments reasonable, billable costs for such care were historically capped at the same level that healthcare providers could receive from Medicare. The State and Federal Governments jointly shared this cost burden to ensure those of lesser means did not go untreated. Under the Biden Administration, States and healthcare providers were permitted to game the system. For example, States "taxed" healthcare providers, but sent the same money back to them in the form of a "Medicaid payment," which automatically unlocked for healthcare providers an additional "burden-sharing" payment from the Federal Government. Through this gimmick, the State could avoid contributing money toward Medicaid services, meaning the State no longer had a reason to be prudent in the amount of reimbursement provided. Instead of paying Medicare rates, many States that utilize these arrangements now pay the same healthcare providers almost three times the Medicare amount, a practice encouraged by the Biden Administration. These State Directed Payments have rapidly accelerated, quadrupling in magnitude over the last 4 years and reaching $110 billion in 2024 alone. This trajectory threatens the Federal Treasury and Medicaid's long-term stability, and the imbalance between Medicaid and Medicare patients threatens to jeopardize access to care for our seniors. I pledged to protect and improve these important Government healthcare programs for those that rely on them. Seniors on Medicare and Medicaid recipients both deserve access to quality care in a system free from the fraud, waste, and abuse, that enriches the unscrupulous and jeopardizes the programs themselves. We will take action to continue to love and cherish the Medicare and Medicaid programs to ensure they are preserved for those who need them most. The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall therefore take appropriate action to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid, including by ensuring Medicaid payments rates are not higher than Medicare, to the extent permitted by applicable law. This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person. Google Pay also uses a virtual version of your card (complete with different details) to communicate with the vendor, so it’s actually more secure than regular contactless. After discovering this trick, I was tapping away left, right and centre. It became so fun that I almost forgot I was spending real money! Oops.

But it gets even better. After using my phone on the London Underground ticket barriers a few times (very satisfying, by the way), I was prompted to skip the requirement to unlock the phone for public transport.

After enabling it, I didn’t even have to turn my screen on to get around London! To crib from a famous series of compilation albums: now that’s what I call seamless.

This isn’t a totally foolproof solution, though. There have been a couple of occasions where the payment terminal didn’t recognize my phone for some reason, so I had to get my card out instead. But these instances were few and far between.

Most of the time, my Pixel 9 Pro XL has made the process of paying using my phone dramatically easier. With all my loyalty cards already in Google Wallet, forgetting my physical wallet when I leave home is no longer the terrifying prospect it once was.
