ITV Receives $2.1 Billion Bid from Sky for Media and Entertainment Unit

U.K. broadcaster ITV has officially confirmed that it has received a £1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) bid from Comcast’s pay-TV platform Sky for its media and entertainment unit. This surprising news, which came overnight in the U.K., could potentially see Comcast taking control of ITV’s linear channels and ITVX streaming business, significantly expanding its presence in the British TV landscape.

The bid from Sky is reportedly focused on creating a U.K.-focused streaming giant, leveraging ITV’s existing content and reach in the market. This move comes after Comcast’s acquisition of Sky for approximately $30 billion in 2018, solidifying its position in the pay-TV industry.

In response to the speculation, ITV released a statement confirming the preliminary discussions with Sky regarding the possible sale of its media and entertainment business. The enterprise value of the deal is set at £1.6 billion, although the terms of the agreement are still uncertain at this stage.

However, it’s worth noting that the discussions exclude ITV’s production and sales arm, ITV Studios, which remains a separate entity from the potential deal with Sky. ITV Studios is known for producing popular shows like “Love Island,” “I’m a Celebrity,” and “Mr Bates vs The Post Office,” and has attracted interest from other companies like RedBird IMI and Banijay.

Following the announcement of the deal talks, ITV also revealed plans to cut $46 million from its budgets due to the softening economy and advertiser uncertainty in the U.K. market. The company anticipates a 9% decline in ad revenues during the crucial fourth-quarter period leading up to Christmas.

Investors reacted positively to the news, with ITV shares surging by 18% at the start of trading in London on Friday. The potential partnership with Sky could open up new opportunities for both companies in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
