The chaotic smash-and-grab burglary at a gaming store in Avondale early this morning resulted in a police officer being injured, shots being fired by at least one officer, and a citywide pursuit that was eventually called off by police supervisors.
According to reports, officers on patrol witnessed two carloads of armed offenders breaking into the GameStop located at 2929 West Addison Street around 4:36 a.m. Four masked men were actively looting the store, all armed with weapons. As the burglars attempted to flee in their getaway vehicles, one of them struck a police officer who was on foot. During the encounter, an officer discharged at least one shot, but fortunately, there were no reports of gunshot injuries.
The crew made their escape in a red Jeep and a white Chrysler 300, with officers in pursuit of the SUV as it sped through neighborhoods with its trunk visibly open. The chase spanned across multiple CPD districts, including Roscoe Village, before heading towards the Kennedy Expressway and eventually into the West Loop. At one point, another driver collided with a CPD patrol car as the pursuit raced through the intersection of Hubbard Street and Ashland Avenue.
The pursuit was eventually called off at around 4:36 a.m. by a supervising officer, adhering to department policies that prioritize the safety of densely populated areas during high-speed chases.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) announced that their investigators were en route to an “officer-involved shooting” in the 2700 block of West Addison Street. Anyone with information regarding the incident was encouraged to contact COPA at 312-746-3609.
