Will Forte recently opened up about the challenges he faced while trying to fill Will Ferrell’s shoes on “Saturday Night Live.” In a conversation with Amy Poehler on her “Good Hang” podcast, Forte discussed the pressure of playing George W. Bush on the iconic sketch comedy show.
Forte joined “SNL” in 2002, following Ferrell’s departure from the cast. He admitted that it was a daunting task to step into the role of Bush, especially considering Ferrell’s legendary portrayal of the former president. Despite the opportunity to showcase his talents, Forte acknowledged that impressions were not his forte, making his portrayal of Bush a “match not made in heaven.”
Reflecting on Ferrell’s iconic performance as Bush, Forte expressed admiration for his predecessor’s comedic genius. He likened replacing Ferrell to trying to replace a beloved character like the Church Lady, played by Dana Carvey. Ferrell had made the role of Bush his own, making it challenging for Forte to live up to those high standards.
While Forte felt that his interpretation of Bush may have been a letdown compared to Ferrell’s, he continued to give his best during his eight seasons on “SNL.” Since leaving the show in 2010, Forte has continued to make a mark in the entertainment industry with roles in popular shows like “The Four Seasons,” “The Great North,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Sweet Tooth,” and “Clone High.”
Despite the challenges he faced following in Ferrell’s footsteps, Forte’s contributions to “SNL” and his subsequent work in television demonstrate his talent and versatility as a comedic actor. The pressure of living up to a comedic legend like Ferrell may have been daunting, but Forte’s dedication to his craft has solidified his own place in the world of comedy.
