Will Forte, the actor and comedian known for his role as MacGruber on Saturday Night Live, is now using his platform to raise awareness about Huntington’s Disease. Teaming up with Teva Pharmaceuticals for the “Honestly HD” campaign, Forte is shining a light on this progressive neurodegenerative disease that currently has no cure. This cause is personal to Forte as his brother-in-law, Doug Modling, has been battling the disease.
Huntington’s Disease is a condition that affects around 41,000 Americans, according to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. It is characterized by the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, leading to involuntary movements, cognitive issues, and mental health challenges. Despite affecting a significant number of individuals, HD remains relatively unknown to the general public.
Forte’s introduction to HD came when he met his now-wife, Olivia, in 2018. Witnessing the impact of the disease on her father’s health opened his eyes to the devastating effects of HD. When Olivia tested negative for the gene but Doug tested positive in 2022, the couple decided to get involved in raising awareness and supporting organizations dedicated to finding a cure.
Testing for Huntington’s Disease involves analyzing CAG repeats in the HTT gene through blood samples. Depending on the number of repeats, individuals can determine their risk of developing the disease. While there is currently no cure for HD, there are medications available to manage symptoms such as chorea (involuntary movements) and cognitive impairments.
Symptoms of HD can vary from motor issues like chorea and dystonia to cognitive challenges such as memory loss and difficulty with planning. Mood and behavioral changes, including depression and irritability, are also common in individuals with HD. Despite the challenges posed by the disease, there are ways to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life through medication, therapy, and assistive devices.
By sharing his family’s journey with HD, Forte hopes to bring more awareness to the disease and encourage research efforts to find a cure. Working closely with Modling, who remains optimistic and active despite his diagnosis, Forte is determined to make a difference in the fight against Huntington’s Disease. Together, they are advocating for increased resources and support for those affected by HD, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
