A Modern Twist on Power Suiting at Snow Xue Gao’s Store
As a moodboard filled with 1980s and ’90s power suiting references adorns the walls of Snow Xue Gao’s store on Bowery, the designer acknowledges that her customers today have a different approach to fashion. While the era of layering and three-piece suits may have passed, Gao has some modern-day suggestions for those looking to update their wardrobes.
Outerwear and tailoring have been consistent themes in Gao’s collections over the past nine years, inspired in part by a pivotal moment when Rihanna sported a navy pinstripe jacket from her Parsons graduate collection. For the fall 2026 season, standout pieces included cloud-soft fuzzy coats with shawl collars and satin lining made from sustainable wool-based fur. Celebrities like Jenna Ortega have already taken notice of Gao’s designs.
While traditional plaid and tweed blazers served as inspiration for Gao, today’s Snow Xue Gao woman is more likely to pair her structured wool coat with a printed cardigan or mandarin collar T-shirt for a practical yet stylish look.
For effortless style, Gao offers sharp jackets with nipped-in silhouettes reminiscent of iconic blazers worn by Karen Mulder and Janet Jackson. These versatile pieces can be dressed down with jeans or paired with tailored trousers for a polished ensemble. Gao’s impeccable tailoring has earned praise for making wearers feel more confident and reliable in the workplace.
Gao also incorporates elegant draping techniques into her designs, adding a touch of sophistication to everyday wear. Gray and cream wool coats feature built-in blanket scarves, while trousers showcase asymmetric overlays and mini skirts that tie at the waist for a unique twist.
To celebrate the launch of her latest collection, Gao plans to host an event at her store where friends of the brand and local customers can try on pieces and have their photos taken by a professional photographer. As a token of appreciation, each guest will receive one of Gao’s popular knitted hoodie-hat-balaclava-bonnet hybrid accessories, perfect for braving the cold New York winter. “I’m all about combining fashion with function,” Gao explains.
