The first season of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere” introduced us to Sam, a 40-something woman searching for direction in her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas. In the pilot episode, Sam surprises everyone with her karaoke performance of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush’s “Don’t Give Up,” showcasing her talent and vulnerability. Music is her outlet for expression, and it plays a significant role in her journey throughout the series.

As the show progresses, we see Sam’s growth and development, culminating in a powerful moment in the series finale. With her chosen family by her side, Sam takes the stage once again, this time belting out Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” The song serves as a fitting anthem for Sam’s personal growth and the hurdles she has overcome.

Lead actress Bridget Everett, who closes her cabaret shows with the same song, delivers a captivating performance that captures the essence of Sam’s journey. Director Lennon Parham allows Everett the space to shine, capturing every moment of her electrifying performance.

One of the standout moments of the final season is when Sam helps Brad write a heartfelt song for his boyfriend Joel. Inspired by Tim Bagley’s stories of his late partner, Bill, Everett crafts a beautiful and poignant song that touches the hearts of everyone present.

The emotional impact of the scene is palpable, with director Robert Cohen praising Bagley for his moving performance. The scene encapsulates the essence of “Somebody Somewhere,” showcasing top-tier talent, exceptional writing, and raw emotion in a small but powerful moment.

Throughout the series, music serves as a key component in Sam’s journey of self-discovery and growth. From her initial reluctance to perform to her triumphant moments on stage, music has been a constant companion for Sam, helping her find her voice and express herself in ways she never thought possible.
