Netflix has started production on the Korean political drama “The Generals” (working title), directed by Yoon Jong-bin. The film features Son Suk-ku and Ha Jung-woo as the historical figures Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan.
This marks Yoon’s first feature film since 2018’s “The Spy Gone North.” Previously, he collaborated with Netflix on the 2022 crime series “Narco-Saints,” which was widely viewed globally. “The Generals” brings him together again with Ha Jung-woo, who also starred in that series.
The storyline follows Roh Tae-woo, who constructs a public persona as an everyman while wielding influence alongside the military strongman Chun Doo-hwan. The film explores Roh’s extended efforts to emerge from Chun’s shadow and secure the top position, delving into the complex network of alliances, rivalries, and institutional strategies that characterize his rise.
Son Suk-ku, internationally recognized for “D.P.” and “A Killer Paradox,” stars as Roh. Ha Jung-woo, a staple in Yoon’s projects with roles in “Assassination” and “Along with the Gods,” portrays Chun Doo-hwan, Roh’s military academy classmate turned authoritarian leader. Ji Chang-wook, recently featured in “The Worst of Evil,” plays Heo Hak-seong, a younger academy graduate seen by Roh as a recurring challenge. Hyun Bong-sik, who appeared in both “Narco-Saints” and “A Killer Paradox,” takes the role of Jung Ho-joong, a classmate connected to both Roh and Chun. Seo Hyun-woo, known for his role in Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” completes the cast as Park Cheol-woong, a prosecutor within Roh’s close circle.
“The Generals” is a co-production between Moonlight Film, which produced “Narco-Saints” and “Karma,” and Sanai Pictures, known for “Hunt” and “Revolver.” The movie will be available exclusively on Netflix.
