Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham caused a stir on Friday with a playful nod to a recent on-court scuffle where she forcefully brought down an opposing player.

The incident occurred during Tuesday’s game between the Fever and the Connecticut Sun, sparked by Sun guard Jacy Sheldon’s physical altercation with Cunningham’s teammate Caitlin Clark, including poking her in the eye.

Following a heated exchange of words between the two players, Clark lightly pushed Sheldon, leading to a confrontation that involved players from both teams.

Sophie Cunningham, right, a teammate of Caitlin Clark, left, posted a video nodding at her hard foul play following a brawl.

Marina Mabrey, Sheldon’s teammate, intervened by pushing Clark to the ground, resulting in a fine and a technical foul that was later upgraded to a flagrant 2 foul for Mabrey, as reported by Alexa Philippou.

Despite tensions cooling down during the game, Cunningham reignited the conflict in the fourth quarter by aggressively knocking Sheldon to the floor in the final minute, sparking a physical altercation between players from both teams.

Cunningham’s actions resulted in a fine for the hard foul, but they also boosted her online popularity significantly. By Friday, she had amassed 1 million followers on TikTok, with many new fans tuning in to watch her games.

In a TikTok video, Cunningham humorously referenced the incident by lip-syncing to Selena Gomez’s “Hands to Myself” with the caption “it’s a joke… the sound was too fitting! happy game day.”

The video garnered positive reactions from fans and influencers, with one user calling Cunningham a “national treasure” and another dubbing her a “legend.”

With her bold play and online charm, Cunningham has quickly become a standout player in the eyes of many, drawing new attention to the Fever and her dynamic presence on the court.
