Sam Moore, one half of the iconic soul duo Sam & Dave, has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary singer, known for hits like “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming,” died in Coral Gables, FL after experiencing complications from surgery.

Sam’s musical journey began when he was discovered singing in church by the legendary Sam Cooke. Initially intended to be a gospel singer, Sam was inspired by Jackie Wilson to pursue a career in pop music instead. It was during a south Florida nightclub talent show that Sam met Dave Prater, and together they formed the dynamic duo that would become Sam & Dave.

Signed by Atlantic Records in 1965, Sam & Dave went on to create a string of iconic hits that solidified their place in rock & roll history. Despite their breakup in 1970, their music continued to resonate with audiences, especially when Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi covered “Soul Man” as the Blues Brothers on ‘SNL’ in the 70s.

Sam’s personal life was marked by struggles with heroin addiction, which he bravely opened up about after marrying Joyce McRae in 1982. With Joyce’s support, Sam was able to overcome his addiction and embark on a successful solo career. He performed for six Presidents at various events and even shared the stage with Bill Clinton at Aykroyd’s 50th birthday celebration.

As a solo artist, Sam collaborated with music legends like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Preston, and Jon Bon Jovi. In 1992, Sam & Dave were rightfully inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy in music history.
