SoulCycle plans to close two Southern California studios this weekend as the once-thriving boutique fitness brand continues to contract its operations following the pandemic’s impact on the fitness industry.
The indoor cycling company is reportedly set to close six locations nationwide on Sunday, as highlighted by multiple media reports cited by TheStreet.
The studios facing closure include the Manhattan Beach-branded site at 820 Pacific Coast Highway in El Segundo and the La Jolla studio at 4303 La Jolla Village Drive in San Diego.
These closures in California are part of a wider series of shutdowns affecting locations in Colorado, New York, and Florida, highlighting the ongoing difficulties for a company once emblematic of the boutique fitness trend.
Reports suggest that employees at several impacted locations have already been informed.
Founded in New York City in 2006, SoulCycle gained a loyal following with its instructor-led, music-focused cycling classes, eventually expanding to over 60 studios across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
However, like many fitness businesses, the company faced challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a shift towards home workouts and digital fitness platforms.
In response, SoulCycle closed approximately 20 studios in 2022 as part of a broader restructuring initiative.
The upcoming closures occur during another transitional phase for the company.
Earlier this month, CEO Evelyn Webster announced her resignation after nearly six years to take on the role of chief executive at the podcast company Audiochuck, according to TheStreet.
Industry trends may be contributing to the challenges.
A 2025 report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association notes that Pilates participation has surged nearly 40% since 2019, while cycling participation has decreased by 33.5% over the same timeframe.
