Security Guard Released After Alleged Shooting at South Loop Grocery Store

A Cook County judge has declined to grant prosecutors’ request for the detention of a security guard from a South Loop grocery store, who is accused of shooting a 17-year-old girl on Tuesday night. Instead, the judge has opted to release the guard, Raven Aikins, 29, under electronic monitoring conditions.

The incident occurred at the Jewel-Osco located at 1224 South Wabash Avenue around 10:15 p.m. According to court documents, Aikins recognized the teenager and three other girls as known shoplifters from previous incidents in the store. Aikins reportedly instructed them to leave the premises, which escalated to a confrontation. Allegedly, in the heat of the moment, Aikins brandished a firearm and discharged a shot, which struck the 17-year-old in the right knee.

The injured girl has been classified as an endangered runaway after leaving a Minneapolis shelter earlier in the year. Reports indicate that she was initially reluctant to reveal her identity to law enforcement officials at the scene, as per sources familiar with the developments.

CWBChicago was established in 2013 by a group of five locals from Wrigleyville and Boystown who sought to provide accurate information amidst the often misleading narratives presented at Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Since inception, our coverage has broadened to include areas like Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, and Uptown. However, our mission remains consistent: offering original public safety reporting enriched with context and detail that exceeds that of mainstream media channels.
