The FCC Approves SpaceX to Launch 7,500 More Starlink Satellites

In an exciting development, the Federal Communications Commission has granted approval to SpaceX to launch an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites. This brings the total number of Starlink satellites to 15,000 worldwide.

The approval not only allows SpaceX to expand its high-speed internet coverage but also enables Starlink satellites to operate across five frequencies. This means they can now provide direct-to-cell connectivity outside the United States and offer supplemental coverage within the U.S.

According to a report by Reuters, SpaceX had initially requested approval for 15,000 additional satellites. However, the FCC decided to defer authorization for the remaining 14,988 proposed Gen2 Starlink satellites.

As per the FCC’s guidelines, SpaceX is required to launch 50% of the approved Starlink satellites by December 1, 2028, and the remaining 50% by December 2031.
