SpaceX’s expansion in the satellite internet business continues as they recently announced the acquisition of $2.6 billion worth of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar. This deal, which is part of a larger $17 billion agreement made in September, comes as SpaceX’s Starlink service gains traction with over 8 million global customers.

The purchase of additional spectrum from EchoStar will be instrumental in the growth of Starlink’s “direct to cell” constellation. This technology will allow T-Mobile customers to access satellite-based 5G internet, expanding the reach and capabilities of SpaceX’s internet services.

EchoStar’s decision to sell off its spectrum licenses was influenced by pressure from the Federal Communications Commission and the Trump administration. This move ultimately led to the sale of the licenses to SpaceX, effectively ending EchoStar’s own plans to build a satellite constellation. In addition to SpaceX, AT&T also acquired a significant portion of EchoStar’s spectrum in a separate deal.

In a separate development, International Airlines Group announced a partnership with SpaceX to install Starlink inflight internet on over 500 aircraft within its portfolio, which includes British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. This move underscores Starlink’s growing presence in the aviation industry, with partnerships already in place with airlines like Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, and Qatar Airways.

With over 8 million customers in 150 countries, SpaceX’s Starlink service continues to gain momentum and expand its global reach. The company’s success in the satellite internet market is evident through its growing customer base and strategic partnerships across various industries.

As SpaceX continues to innovate and expand its services, the future looks bright for Starlink and the possibilities it holds for connecting people around the world. Stay tuned for more updates on SpaceX’s advancements in the satellite internet space.
