Jack Betts, a talented actor known for his roles in various films and television shows, passed away on June 19 at the age of 96. His nephew, Dean Sullivan, confirmed that Betts peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in Los Osos, Calif.
Born and raised in Jersey City, N.J., Betts later moved to Miami with his family at the age of 10. After graduating from Miami Senior High School, he pursued a degree in theater at the University of Miami. His passion for acting led him to New York, where he landed his first supporting role on Broadway in the 1953 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Richard III.”
Betts honed his craft as a member of The Actors Studio, a prestigious organization for performers, directors, and playwrights. In 1959, he made his film debut in the Canadian thriller “The Bloody Brood,” marking the beginning of his successful film career.
Throughout the years, Betts appeared in a wide range of TV shows, including “Checkmate,” “General Hospital,” and various soap operas. He also returned to Broadway for productions of “Sweet Bird of Youth” and “Dracula,” showcasing his versatility as an actor.
One of Betts’ notable roles was in the spaghetti Western film “Sugar Colt” in 1966, where he portrayed Dr. Tom Copper. He went on to star in a series of spaghetti Westerns and other films such as “Gods and Monsters,” “Falling Down,” and the “Batman” franchise.
In Sam Raimi’s 2002 film “Spider-Man,” Betts played Henry Balkan, the Oscorp board chair who met a tragic end at the hands of the Green Goblin. His performance in the film further solidified his reputation as a talented character actor.
In addition to his film and TV credits, Betts was also the author of a play titled “Screen Test: Take One,” showcasing his multifaceted talent in the entertainment industry.
Throughout his career, Betts formed a close friendship with actress Doris Roberts and attended Hollywood events together until her passing in 2016. He is survived by his nephew, nieces, and sister, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and contributions to the world of entertainment.
